We are pleased to present the program of the Mandatory Refresher Course held in Arezzo way back in 1997. A heartfelt thank you to all these historic organizers and speakers, driven by an ethical, deontological, and legal conscience that fostered informed refusal, such as that of blood transfusions for reasons of faith in the Holy Scriptures of Jehovah’s Witnesses. With this milestone, they enabled the progressive recognition of Biorights supported by the most current Bioethics, such as the Advance Medical Treatment Declaration (DAT), regulated by the long parliamentary process of the Living Will. This is useful when we are no longer able to reaffirm our previously expressed wishes, while lucid, regarding proposed life-saving treatments or for illnesses that require permanent treatments or obstinacy with machines or artificial systems that prevent even the slightest social life.

Special thanks are due to the Local Ethics Committee of the USL8 Health Authority of Arezzo, which, in full collaboration with the local Health Care Committee and the Hospital Information Service of the World Headquarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses, facilitated the dissemination of all the international scientific and ethical information needed to break down centuries-old cultural barriers and prejudices here in Italy. Thanks also to Mr. Giuseppe Baldini and his staff for videotaping and soundproofing the event.
