SolitudeSolitude, what an animal you are, I would like you to be similar to a canary whose chirping cheers up my day and similar to a cat that miaows and makes me purr or a little dog that comes to meet me when I return. Instead, you stay apart there, mute, with spent eyes fastened on me without ever telling me anything day after day. Solitude, what an ugly animal you are. I think I am free of you, I smile, I sing, but alas, you are around the corner, you wait for me at the breach and begin to follow me again. What can I do to make myself free of you? If you were a fiery horse I would tame you, if you were a lion I would domesticate you, but you, solitude, what animal are you? Shapeless, spent, slow, you give me a sense of agony that makes me feel frustrated, but I will smile again and go out to free myself of you. It suffices to have patience and not tire oneself in this difficult conflict. Poems by Loretta AngioliniTranslation by Laura Petrelli Ferry |
